Physical Education

PRIMARY (GRADES 1 -6)

The new direction for Physical Education at Primary level is to provide students with a safe, enjoyable and nurturing environment where physical activity and the development of motor skills will be enhanced. Each student will be given the opportunity to maximize his/her potential through the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will transfer to a healthy lifestyle and lifelong sports. The basis of the Primary Programme is Body Management Competence, which gives focus to the development of fundamental skills that lead into specialized skill training. Primary students will also participate in the core sports of Basketball, Softball/Baseball, Volleyball, Soccer and Track & Field. Inter-school competitions take place in all of the "core sports" including Mini-Tennis. SECONDARY SCHOOL (GRADES 7 - 12)

Physical Education is the nucleus of healthy life styles and caters significantly to the education of those who practice its tenets. It is through this medium that an invaluable learning experience unfolds, allowing all learners to access the knowledge, skills and attitude that shape their lives through this active learning process. Regular physical activity is pertinent to the development of the 'whole man'. For children, it is through physical activity that they focus more closely on their lives as a whole. Thus it is critical that prudent focus and planning must be placed on the development of their psychomotor, cognitive and affective skills. Therefore, the well being of individuals depends greatly on the soundness of the Physical Education programme. Students in grades 7 - 12 are expected to address the challenges and fun of sports and recreation during Physical Education classes which are guided by the teacher, but student centered to provide an avenue for socialization of each individually and as a team.As the skills of these disciplines are learned and practiced by the students, it is also expected that the further role of the Physical Education teacher is to inculcate such societal accepted norms as general attitudes, social values and general life skills. Certainly these skills will assist students to make positive decisions about the acceptable behaviours of our society.

Inclusive of the core sports, Basketball, Softball, Volleyball, Track and Field and Soccer which are taught at the high school level, there is the infusion of Physiology and Food and Nutrition as components of the whole Physical Education programme. Secondary to these are sports that may be used as options while teaching Physical Education such as Baseball, Badminton, Cricket, Cycling, American Football, Gymnastics and Tumbling, Hockey, Rugby, Swimming and Table Tennis. The Physical Education students are not only to experience direct physical activity during classes, but to also engage in theoretical work of the subject as outlined in the curriculum in order to facilitate skills as well as content testing on the subject. It is hoped that the course of study in Physical Education will eventually be assessed in the National Examinations. Outside the regular school programme and extra - curricular activities, students will be encouraged to participate in physical activities for fun, personal fitness and health. Thus the long term planning and development of the Physical Education programme will continue to be the long-term health and prosperity of the nation.
