About NLS

National Literacy Services

Literacy LogoNational Literacy Services seeks to create a functionally literate nation where all Bahamians will acquire positive attitudes, obtain essential knowledge and recognize their full potential for productive living.

Let's Read Bahamas was created in 1994, in an effort to increase functional literacy. Programs were developed to sensitize the public, promote relationships and raise literacy standards. With its increasing success, came a greater demand for its services. The Government of The Bahamas re-examined the entire structure of the project and hence the National Literacy Services (NLS) was born to meet the needs of the entire population.

Goals/Objectives:

  • To unify the country around the common cause of Literacy;
  • To forge meaningful relationships between NLS and other agencies to ensure that the needs of all citizens are met;
  • To determine and provide ongoing training for tutors and staff;
  • To develop programmes that will foster Adult and Family Literacy;
  • To build a sense of community;
  • To establish Adult Learning Centres in New Providence and the Family Islands and,
  • To establish cordial networking with public and private agencies and civic organizations.
Two major programmes are operated by National Literacy Services: Adult Literacy and Family Literacy.

The Adult Literacy Programme caters to students who have left school and do not possess basic reading skills, and adults in the workplace who need basic literacy skills. The Laubach Way To Reading is used with the Sequoyah and Sentence Master Software Programmes, as supplementary materials. Whilst helping an adult or new reader to acquire basic literacy skills, tutors are encouraged to build a ladder of successful learning experiences and self confidence, and interact with students in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Family Literacy Programme
addresses the needs of young 'at risk parents' who have not completed high school. The programme enables parents to appreciate the importance of early learning, reading and communication. It also highlights the need for parents to provide creative, literacy rich and development mentally appropriate environment for their children.
There is an ongoing recruitment of volunteers, who are trained by staff members of National Literacy Services. The instruction in Family Literacy assists students with the development of Literacy and Life Skills to enhance the quality of their personal and family life. Parents and children develop a learning partnership as they receive instruction under the same roof.
Participating adults should have an interest in improving their literacy and educational skills, have a child registered in the preschool and make a commitment to attend classes on a regular basis.
