Future Teacher Teacher Training Quality Assurance Unit
The Tertiary/Quality Assurance Division is responsible for all tertiary education matters in the Ministry of Education. Its mandate includes the following areas:

Future Teachers Of The Bahamas Programme:
The future Teachers of the Bahamas Programme, which operates within policy guidelines, was established for the purpose of providing the Bahamian education system with a cadre of competent teachers for the delivery of quality education. The principal focus of the programme is to attract to the teaching profession senior students in government and independent secondary schools who are interested in making teaching a career.
The programme is particularly interested in future teachers who are interested in pursuing studies in the specified disciplines of:

The goals and objectives of the Tertiary / Quality Assurance Division with respect to the Future Teachers of The Bahamas Programme are:

To attract adequate numbers of talented and academically sound students into the pre service teacher education programme at the College of The Bahamas.

To provide enriching programmes to ensure that students attain the specific academic and or practical qualification for direct entry into tertiary institutions e.g. The College of The Bahamas;

To expose students to positive classroom situations, learning experiences
and techniques which present a variety of master teachers;

To motivate students by extrinsic and intrinsic rewards to make teaching a career of choice;
-
To sensitize the Bahamian society at all levels to things uniquely fundamental and of continuous importance to the teaching profession for the sound progressive growth and and development of the people and nation.
The College of The Bahamas is charged with the responsibility of
training the nation's teachers and by that mandate produces a cadre of teachers on an annual basis for placement within pre, primary and secondary schools on New Providence and the Family Islands. The training of teachers is done within the context of the needs of the education system and the needs of the country generally. The Division acts as a liaison with the School of Education of The College of the Bahamas in teacher education matters, is actively involved in various committees, teaching practice exercises, the selection of prospective teacher education students and offers financial support through the award of grants.
The goals and objectives of the Division with respect to teacher training are:

To provide the necessary financial support which would enhance the provision of a cadre of trained teachers for the education system while they pursue studies at The College of The Bahamas

To assist in the identification of serving teachers desirous of pursuing advanced studies abroad
-
To provide the necessary assistance/support to The College of the Bahamas in the teacher training process relative to the supervision of pre-service teachers while on teaching practice

To ensure that the disciplines chosen for study by prospective teacher trainees at The College of The Bahamas relate to the needs of the education system;

To ensure that through the future Teachers of the Bahamas and other programmes there is a reasonable and ready number of teachers in training at The College of The Bahamas to augment the needs of the education system on an annual basis.
The Quality Assurance Unit
The Quality Assurance Unit was formed in February 2000, to carry forward the developmental work for the establishment of a quality assurance mechanism for the country.
The goals and objectives of the Unit are:
To assure the quality and recognition of educational programmes offered at all levels of public and private education and training institutions/providers operating or wishing to operate in The Bahamas;
To register all levels of private institutions/providers operating or wishing to operate in The Bahamas

To monitor registered institutions/providers to ensure their compliance
with the registration regulations

To oversee standards in off-shore institutions/providers operating in
The Bahamas

To conduct workshops for education and training institutions/providers to ensure that quality standards are maintained;

To evaluate and determine the equivalency of qualifications through the work of the National Equivalency Committee of which the Quality Assurance Unit is the Secretariat;

To develop a Quality Assurance Mechanism for the Bahamas and establish a National Accreditation and Equivalency Council;

To liaise with other Government Ministries and private entities
(local and international ) on matters relative to tertiary education;

To represent the Ministry of Education on councils / committees and at meetings relative to the above.

The Division promotes the enhancement and maintenance of quality in the education system of The Bahamas through teacher training initiatives/incentives at the pre-service and in-service levels, ensure that quality exists in the programmes and credentials offered by education and training institutions / providers and to make certain that each educational institution is one of quality.
