National Youth Service Program The aim of the National Youth Service Programme is to instill civic and social pride, as well as responsibility in our very youthful population. The full complement of the program brings new energy and optimism to community problem solving; engage youth to serve their communities, while developing themselves through educational, vocational and character enrichment programs. It is envisioned, that this Program will steer youth into the positive productive use of their time, talents and energy. Although voluntary for most participants, participation is encouraged through incentives, such as weekly stipends, scholarships, grants and job placement oppurtunities. At present, only one component of the program is in full operation. This component is a partnership between The Government of The Bahamas and YEAST. This program is a character enhancing and development program for at-risk males. The residential camp is a 6-9 month program on the Island of Andros for young men 13-19years. (Full details of this program can be provided) National Youth Month is held each May, in collaboration with the Youth Leaders throughout The Bahamas. The month acknowledges the positive contributions that youth, youth leaders and youth organizations make to youth development. The month also:
Each island is responsible for organizing activities during the month. Activities include but are not limited to a church service, March and rally, recognition ceremony and youth parliament. Special effort is made to involve marginalized, physically challenged, unattached and at-risk youth. Each year, thousands of our young people are out of school for the summer break. The Youth Division, in collaboration with the Sports and Culture Divisions of the Ministry hosts a major 4-week fun-filled Programme. Young persons between 5-15 years are engaged in organized activities, character building and personal development programs. Programs are based in schools and churches and in parks and playgrounds throughout New Providence and the Family Islands. National Independence Celebrations During Independence each year (July 10), the Youth Division assists the Independence Committee on all youth matters during the celebrations. Youth in The Bahamas participate actively in the celebrations each year. The Youth Division also assists the planning committee each year with youth involvement in these celebrations both in New Providence and in Grand Bahama. Attention is focussed on the war dead, those who gave their lives for our country. |
