The Examinations & Assessment Division has responsibilty for the following:
- National Examinations
- Test Development and Administration
- Supervision of Large Scale Assessment
- Conduct and Administration of External Examinations
- Issuing and Verification of Student Transcripts
The Section holds as its mandate the effective and efficient assessment and evaluation of The Bahamas' education system.
Why do we Evaluate or Test?
Tests have several purposes:
- to assess students' understanding of the syllabus/curriculum;
- to identify weaknesses and strengths of educational programmes;
- to provide educators, parents and students with feedback;
- for placement;
- for selection.
What are the key stages at which National Examinations are administered?
There are three key stages:
- Primary - Grade Level Assessment Test (GLAT)
Grade 3
subjects examined: English Language and Mathematics.
Grade 6
subjects examined: English Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
- Junior High - Bahamas Junior Certificate Examination (BJC)
usually written at the end of grade nine.

- Senior High - Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGSCE) usually written at the end of grade twelve.

Specific duties of Administrators and Subject Secretaries include:
- Syllabus development and their constant reviews.
- Question Paper development (cyclical).
- Coordination of all national examinations.
- Supervision of the Marking of Question Papers.
- Chief Moderator of Teacher Assessed Components.
- Grading and Awarding.
- Standard Setting
- Facilitation of Test Development (Item Writing, Marking and Facilitation of Grading Procedures)
- Compilation of Examination Reports.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS
The Testing and Evaluation Section is the Official Authority for College Level. Technical and Vocational and Professional Examinations administered in The Bahamas.
The exams are designed by Overseas Colleges, Examining Boards or other Professional Entities and despatch to the Testing and Evaluation Section for administration to subscribing candidates .

The Testing and Evaluation Section also administers examinations to students attending colleges throughout the U. S., Canada, the Caribbean and Great Britain who opt to sit their finals at home for legitimate reasons.
