IDB Project

Project Coordinating Unit

In 1995, the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas signed a US$33 million credit agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for a three element Educational Development loan to affect desired improvements to the national education function in the areas of Educational Services, Institutional Strengthening and Vocational Education & Pre-employment Training.

A Project Coordinating Unit (PCU) was established to manage the project. The overall work of the PCU is guided by a multi-agency body called the Project Advisory committee. The fundamental objective of the PUC is to improve the quality and efficiency of primary and secondary education in the Bahamas.

The Educational Services Improvement Component centers on the procurement of the services of consultants to affect curriculum revision in Mathematics, Science, Education Media, General Curriculum, Reading, Technical and Vocational Education and Educational Planning. The Institutional Strengthening component provides technical assistance and training in management and planning, a computer based education management information system and a computerized system for inventory, supervision and control of school and equipment maintenance. Lastly, the Study in Vocational Education and Pre-employment Training evaluates present vocational curricula in relation to out-of-school training, post secondary education and the utilization of existing facilities for vocational education.

Under the Project, C. V. Bethel and Doris Johnson Senior High School were constructed. Without a doubt, the Project will continue to be an asset to the successful fulfillment of the government's mandate for advancing education in The Bahamas
