Abaco District

Provides all persons in the Abaco District with the opportunity to receive an education which ensures that they develop the necessary moral values, attitudes, knowledge and skills required for a productive life in a Christian and Democratic Country.

District Plans:

1. Facilitate professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators.
2. Establish a branch of B.T.V.I. in the Abacos.
3. Fully centralize the educational service to better utilize resources.
4. Commence an ESL and Readiness Centre to assist challenged and immigrant children.
5. Up-grade sporting facilities including the construction of an in-door gymnasium.
6. Bring on stream an on-line educational centre.
7. Formalize mandatory summer programmes for under achieving students.
8. Standardize District Examinations.
9. Empower Schools to produce site-based training and developmental initiatives.
10. Implement strategies to improve Reading in the school.
11. Develop Adult and Family Literacy Programmes.

Accomplishments:

1. Amalgamation of most of the mainland primary schools.
2. Establishment of an Educational Resources Centre
3. Posting of officers for specialized services in Speech Pathology, Curriculum, FLHE and Human Resources.
4. Tertiary level courses by the College of the Bahamas
5. Commencement of Annual Book Fair and Parade in promotion of Reading literacy.
6. Pre-school Education in Public Schools.
7. Implementation of after school clubs to enhance the social development of students.
8. Basic training of Pre-School Operators.
