Eleuthera District & Current Is.

Welcome to Eleuthera and Current Island District web Page, the isle whose name means freedom.

The District Described

The Eleuthera District consists of eleven Primary, Three High and two All Age Schools, scattered over 110 miles of road and on three neighbouring islands: Spanish Wells, Harbour Island and Current Island. The total student population is 2487 with a teaching staff of 184 and 52 support staff members. There are Pre-school attachments at eight of the Primary Schools. In addition to the Government owned schools, there are seven Independent Schools:
  • St. Anne’s Catholic School in Rock Sound
  • Current Community in the current
  • Central Christian Academy in Spanish Wells
  • Deep Creek Middle School at Deep Creek
  • Eleuthera Preparatory in Governor’s Harbour
Three of the aforementioned work in harmony with the Government Schools. The island is divided into three Administrative Local Government Districts and two political Districts but supervised by a single District Superintendent, who is centrally located in Savannah Sound. Most of the High School Students travel to school by buses.

CHALLENGES

  1. Because of the length of the Island, supervision is extremely taxing for a single district Superintendent.
  2. Coping with machine and appliance maintenance with no expertise on the Island.
  3. Attempting to function, as all sections of the Ministry, to staff satisfaction.
  4. Teacher complacency aggravated by tenure/domicility.
  5. Support staff shortages at most schools
