Purchasing and Supplies Section

The Supplies Section of the Ministry of Education is responsible for the procurement of materials and supplies for the Ministry and the Department of Education. These include: tuition, cleaning, general supplies and furniture.

Purchases for the Department of Education are stored in warehouses from which they are disbursed to schools in New Providence and throughout The Bahamas via the Mail Boat system. Family Island supplies are sent to the District Superintendent or Principal.

Requisitions:

There is open tendering wherein local and international vendors are invited to participate. All Requisition of supplies are obtained after the submission of three (3) quotes by Purchase Orders. The latter is a contract which commits The Ministry or Department of Education to pay for the goods/supplies received.

In-house Purchase Orders have a maximum limit of $500.00. Orders over $500.00 must be approved by The Public Treasury Department.

Ministry Finance and Accounts

This section is responsible for the preparation of the Ministry's budget, processing the monthly and weekly payroll and payments and recording expenditure, reconciliation of statements of accounts and revenue collected.

To accomplish the above functions effectively the section is divided into a Payroll Unit and an Accounts Payable Unit.

The Ministry's Accounts Section is online - connected to The Bahamas Government's Treasury Accounting System. All processing with the exception of the Weekly Payroll, Journals and Warrants are executed in-house.
